So the chant “You got Kronwalled” apparently made the rounds yesterday during the Ducks-Red Wings game. (I wouldn’t know…I was busy having 16,000 heart attacks at the Blues-Kings Game 6.) But Kronwalled sounds like a pretty legit hockey verb. It’s catchy. It’s to the point. You say someone’s getting Kronwalled, you know that person’s having … Continue reading
Brunner known for both is goal-scoring abilities AND occasionally being a pirate at practice. I got this image from the Detroit News. They can’t be mad for that right? I should be studying for a test I have in a few hours. So naturally I took to twitter and engaged in a debate about which … Continue reading
Hey Blackhawks fans. Remember when a bunch of people that liked your team would write stuff here? Well too bad, cause I’m in charge now! (But don’t tell the editors I said that, god I don’t want to make her mad!) Yeah your team probably wins the central this year while my beloved Detroit struggles … Continue reading
Hi! This is a series about my journey into the world of men’s league/rec league hockey in southeastern Virginia. Having never played before at the age of 24 I decided I wanted to, and thought I’d share my thoughts along the journey. Is it great? Am I an idiot? Have tips? Feel free to let … Continue reading

There are few trophies in sport that inspire such feelings of awe as the Stanley Cup. Those who play for it and are able to lift it above their heads are a privileged few; those of us laypeople who get to come in contact with it didn’t take that hard road to earn it, but … Continue reading
I started college at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado in August 1998. In October, Matthew Shepard died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins after he was beaten and left for dead in a homophobic attack. Just a few months later, on April 20, 1999, I came back from an afternoon class and … Continue reading
… and started thinking about the individual strategies teams seem to live by. I should be finishing a long over-due post about Mike Richards and Jeff Carter winning the Cup, but I did this instead. The Anaheim Ducks: When in doubt go watch a Disney film. The Boston Bruins: When in doubt be crazy. The Buffalo … Continue reading
The 2012-2013 NHL schedule came out yesterday, and in my household, it’s akin to Christmas. (Well, the unveiling of the NFL and USC Trojan football schedules are similarly huge events in our house.) My husband and I enjoy sports-related travel, whether it’s to see our favorite teams, or just to cram as many sports events into … Continue reading
You never forget the first one. It took 45 years for the Kings to win their first-ever Stanley Cup. Some fans waited that long. Some have waited their entire lifetimes. This Cup is for them. It’s for the diehards. It’s for the people who wandered the desert, who endured years of terrible hockey and heartbreak … Continue reading
“I just wanted to see it here with my own eyes.” It was the lament of the masses who flooded Staples Center on Wednesday. It stood in stark contrast to the revelry of the hours before, when lines snaked around the bars and restaurants around the arena, when the plaza across the street was already … Continue reading
Can you be an outward fangirl and still be taken seriously as a fanatic?
It’s a question I’ve wrestled with for a long time, heightened by the debate spawned by the CBC’s controversial “While the Women Watch” partnership. It’s made people talk about the perception of women in sport, women as fans (hey, we’re not all stupid and drooling over men), and reminded many of us who are female fans of sport that the “ogle first, ask about the game later” perception of us is still very much a crutch the media and male sports folks lean on. Continue reading
It’s been a little crazy lately for our merry band of writers (graduations, moving, international travel, family members hospitalized, ongoing health problems, etc.) so we’ve been just a wee bit distracted from writing as of late. Hoping things will calm down soon for everyone and we’re very excited to have my friend and long suffering Kings fan Jenn joining us as a blogger as well! 🙂
That said, I did want to offer a few quick comments on hockey happenings this week: Continue reading
No sports network is perfect. Not even close. CBC has always been a bit of a mixed bag. The Hot Stove is always better than the NBCSN intermission segments for example and while Don Cherry is a relic, Elliotte Friedman is one of the most measured and thoughtful commentators in the sport. Continue reading
We haven’t blogged much about concussions here yet. It’s not because we don’t care. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. We care about so deeply about this issue we haven’t wanted to write about it if we couldn’t do it justice. Part of the reason we are so invested in concussion prevention, diagnosis and treatment is because we (unfortunately) have a better understanding of what it’s like dealing with chronic, invisible disabilities than the average person. One of our writers for example, is dealing with post-concussion syndrome from a concussion sustained months ago.
I’ve never had a concussion, but do suffer from a debilitating chronic illness that has some similar symptoms, Fibromyalgia. Continue reading
Some NHL fans could care less about the IIHF Men’s World Championships. I get that. The tournament falls right in the middle of the NHL playoffs and the games are airing at times when most people in North America are either asleep or at work. Some of us though really do want to watch and we do so for different reasons. To accommodate viewers all over the world and to increase exposure, the IIHF is broadcasting games directly on YouTube and in Canada TSN is broadcasting some games on TV and streaming other games online.

The excellent site Awful Announcing just posted an analysis of an interview with ESPN’s Senior VP Vince Doria about NHL coverage on ESPN, or more specifically, the lack of coverage. Doria’s claim that, “where [hockey] really doesn’t transfer much to is a national discussion, which is something that typifies what we do” drew the ire of a number of hockey fans on twitter today. Continue reading
The tweet above was my first reaction to the news that Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn were suspended for game 3 for a “team rule violation” that was reportedly closing down a bar in Scottsdale, AZ at 4 am. I was mad on behalf of those players and I was mad on my own behalf since I had written a post on the xenophobia informing the critiques of Radulov’s performance in a game where he was, apparently, hungover and tired. Continue reading
During Sunday’s Nashville Predators vs. Phoenix Coyotes game on the NBC Sports Network, Keith Jones and Jeremy Roenick gave a scathing critique of the play of Nashville Forward Alexander Radulov. Continue reading

To start of this post, I want to talk a little bit about myself, as I haven’t been around these parts too long. And I feel like ‘soapboxing’ needs a bit of background information. I am a woman. I am a little bit gay, a little bit straight and very much human. I like hockey. … Continue reading
My main team is out of the playoffs so now the fans are in full on panic with assigning blame and coming up with crazy ass trade proposals. To deal (and because my health is interfering significantly with my ability to write anything of substance) I decided to use the Meme Generator to make some stupid memes. Hopefully a couple make you laugh. Continue reading
I grew up in a state where football is a religion, snow was something seen maybe once or twice a year, and the kids who played hockey were the weirdos. Yeah, I’m talking about Texas. I didn’t grow up with the culture of hockey. I didn’t understand why waivers for free Houston Aeros tickets were … Continue reading
My good friend and reader of the blog, @sk8hrd, decided to put his big brain to good use this week in hopes of making sense of the NHL supplementary discipline process. (It sure beats thinking about how his Sharks are doing.) He emailed me the following information on Friday, April 20th and I asked if he’d be willing to let me share it on the blog because I think he’s really onto something here. Continue reading

Nashville coach Barry Trotz said, “If they want a Ping Pong table in Nashville, we’ll get them one. It’s their toys, we have our toys. We’re OK. It’s not a big deal to us at all.” – USA Today Methinks thou doth protest too much Mr. Trotz. While completely plausible that a man with no … Continue reading
I’m a Pens fan. A diehard one. Anybody who knows me can tell you this. For my birthday, beer steins with the Pens logo on them are not out of the norm as presents. This is just how I roll, and I like it that way. My team might not be perfect, but whose is … Continue reading
I’m sorry to disappoint, but no, we did not follow one of your favorite NHL stars for one day during the playoffs. I didn’t spend a concussed day on the couch with Jonathan Toews. Nor did I go to close-combat training with the Pens roster. I didn’t even manage a round of golf with Phil … Continue reading
I don’t know about you but I’m a little relieved. If I, as the world’s largest and most dedicated Red Wings fan of all time, am being honest with myself, heading back to Detroit with the series tied at 1-1 is a little disappointing. A pair of games that end 3-2? The mighty Wings are … Continue reading
Despite a secret KGB plot involving an Alex Radulov dive and polonium poisoning not to mention Gary Bettman’s transparent small market favoritism in not suspending Shea Weber the Red Wings gritted out a win in Tennessee. Todd Bertuzzi opened the game by getting revenge without being named in a court case on Shea Weber whose … Continue reading
Like many non-lottery team fans, my excitement over last night’s drawing was less about the lottery itself and more about “OMG new hockey related news in this horrible dead time before the playoffs that already has me on the verge of a panic attack thinking about the offseason and how am I going to survive if there’s work stoppage? And-” Continue reading
Karen M, Lily L, Sam K, Becky D & Kathryn P share their predictions for round one in the Western Conference (yes, the Western Conference does actually exist. No, it is not some figment of Gary Bettman’s imagination). Please be sure to tell us how brilliant/stupid we are in the comments. Continue reading
A hockey blog just wouldn’t be complete without playoff predictions! Karen M, Lily L, Becky D and Sam K share their Round 1 Eastern Conference predictions and who they’ll be rooting for. Continue reading

Q: Does the world need yet another hockey blog?
A: No? Too bad you’re getting one anyway.
